The local municipality here in South Africa was interested in donating bicycles to some impoverished children and discovered that the Christadelphian missionaries here were working with children in need of this nature on a weekly basis. The Christadelphians have a special club for children fitting this criteria called KINOS (Kids In Need Of Support), where not only are the children living in extremely-poor households, but also only have one parent, or no parents and living with a grandparent or in an orphanage.
The municipality offered to use the KINOS club as the recipients for the bicycles and a day of fun for the children that they’ll never forget, since many live with next to nothing in terms of belongings. All of the children on the recipient list have been faithfully attending the Kempton Park Ecclesia’s meeting for at least two years and are active in church activities.
It took some coordination, but we were able to drive out to the townships of Tembisa and Eslon Park and collect up all of the children in various missionary vehicles with empty trailers in the back for hauling their surprise bicycle gifts back home with them at the end of the day. It was a great joy to watch their faces and the room exploded with excitement when it was announced that ALL 26 OF THEM were getting bicycles to go home with that day. There were lots of joyous exclamations and shocked expressions around the room.

The children were treated to a nutritious meal at the local municipality’s conference room plus a clown to entertain them and make balloons for them with the grand prize at the end of the day being the bicycle giveaway. All of the bikes were sized specifically for the children’s ages, and we spent some time before going home fitting the seats to make sure all of the kids could use them properly. There was lots of happy singing in the car on the way home that afternoon to drop off the children.
Twenty-six bicycles were given away to children living in poverty-stricken conditions.
The littlest boy to receive a bike needed some training wheels on his.
The children always love seeing themselves on the video camera LCD.
The children were all given a nutritious lunch.
