With a city as stunning as Cape Town, we wanted to get an aerial view to fully appreciate the unique way in which the city is situated between mountains and ocean, so we took a helicopter ride leaving from the V & A Waterfront earlier this week. The pictures show what a rare gem of a place Cape Town is, a metropolitan city located on the edge of crystal blue Atlantic Ocean waters with Lion’s Head and Table Mountains running right through the middle of the city of 3.5 million people.
Our helicopter pilot spotted a pod of dolphins passing just offshore that we flew over and he also spotted a right back whale and her calf that we were nearby as well, a real rarity this time of year, so we were able to fly low over both and get a good viewing of them as they were heading south toward the Cape peninsula.
Lion’s Head Mountain rises in the foreground with Table Mountain in the background.
The Greenpoint Stadium (capacity: 70,000 people) is located in the foreground, constructed for the 2010 World Cup Soccer Games. In the center-right, Lion’s Head and Signal Hill form the image of a sleeping lion.
Picturesque Camps Bay, a suburb of Cape Town, where we’re staying this week. The Twelve Apostles mountain forms a stunning backdrop behind Camps Bay.
Our helicopter flew over the top of Table Mountain. We experienced some updrafts and rapid wind currents, but the pilot handled them well and kept the flight fairly smooth.
A view of Sandy Bay and Hout Bay facing south down the Cape Peninsula.
Landing back at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront.
Ready for takeoff before our 20-minute helicopter ride over stunning Cape Town.
